Banana Republic designs a holiday collection inspired by Anna Karenina

Banana Republic will look to the late-19th-century Russian high-society romantic imperialism for it’s 2012 holiday capsule collection.  In partnership with Focus Features the line will draw it’s inspiration from the the 2012 adaptation of Tolstoy’s 1877 novel of the classic film Anna Karenina which opens in movie theaters on November 9th.  Kiera Knightley will play the starring role of Anna Karenina alongside Jude Law.

The line will be styled and curated by twice-Academy Award-nominated Anna Karenina costume designer, Jacqueline Durran.  Encouraging a return to elegance evocative of the era of Anna Karenina, the capsule features modern pieces for men and women, including polished, feminine looks for her and tailored styles for him. Reflective of the film’s high-society period, the capsule presents a modern-day collection including alluring embellishments, luxe fabrics such as velvet, lace and faux fur, and romantic styles.  The looks will be a modern day interpretation of period pieces.

Working with Banana Republic and Simon to curate and style a capsule collection inspired by looks from Anna Karenina was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” says Durran. “I was given the unique chance to apply my passion for period styles to a collection that translates to fashion today.

The capsule collection will debut in October both in-store and at bananarepublic.com.  Prices will range from $39.50 for a blouse to $325 for a coat. Jewelry and lavish accessories range in price from $29.50 for jewelry to up to $250 for a handbag.

As we began designing this Holiday collection, we found ourselves very inspired by the elegance typical of the Anna Karenina time period,” said Banana Republic Creative Director and Executive Vice President of Design, Simon Kneen.

The collection will be revealed in the November advertising campaign in both print and online.

Oh wow, what an interesting concept! I never thought of this movie as a great love story but a tragic one. BR really found a niche 🙂
