Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis

Fern Mallis, who is credited with being the Founder of New York Fashion Week, is returning with her successful lecture series at the 92Y called Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis.  Her program has already heard from top designers as Tommy Hilfiger, Tom Ford and Michael Kors.

Now she is returning in January 2013 with another impressive line-up of industry leaders.  The series will launch on Wed, Jan 9 with Marc Jacobs.  Since 1987, when he became the youngest designer ever to win the CFDA’s Perry Ellis Award, Marc Jacobs has gone from strength to strength. He took over Women’s Design at Perry Ellis, where he won another CFDA Award for his Grunge Collection. In 1993, he launched his own wildly successful company and has since designed children’s clothes, eyewear and fragrances. As Artistic Director of Louis Vuitton, he made the firm a global luxury brand. He’s garnered numerous other awards, including a Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award. He’s also a French Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letter) and has worked with over 100 charities worldwide.

On Wed, Jan 16, the exuberant, hip and fun, New York designer Betsey Johnson will be in the hot seat. Betsey has built her long career in fashion by following her own rules. When she started designing clothes, she became part of New York’s downtown Warhol art scene; Edie Sedgwick was her house model and the Velvet Underground’s John Cale wore her designs on-stage and off. The Coty Award, Designer of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Signature Awards, the Accessories Council and the National Arts Club are just a few of the honors she’s earned. Johnson is a breast cancer survivor and a strong advocate in the fight against the disease.

The next industry veteran on the schedule is the much beloved Vera Wang.  On Tues, Feb 19 Vera Wang, a former figure skater, was senior fashion editor at Vogue for 15 years and then a design director for Ralph Lauren. She designed her own wedding dress, then opened a bridal boutique and soon launched her own signature collection. Now hugely popular, she has a large Hollywood following and also designs lingerie, jewelry and home products.

Award-winning creator and organizer of Fashion Week in New York and cities around the world, Fern Mallis has been an industry game changer in the world of fashion and design for 32 years. Former senior VP of IMG Fashion, and executive director of CFDA, she hosts fashion industry talk show Fashion Insiders w/Fern Mallis on SiriusXM’s flagship celebrity talk channel STARS. She’s currently president of her own leading international fashion and design consultancy—Fern Mallis LLC.

Tickets are on sale now at the 92Y located at Lexington Avenue and 92nd St in NYC or online at 92Y.org.

Have a Facebook account?  Feel free to post a question on the ticket page and you may hear your question asked at the end of the lecture.

Come out and join fashion industry leader and award-winning creator of NY Fashion Week Fern Mallis for a look at the inner workings and culture of fashion. Hear from some of the most talented, successful and iconic personalities in the fashion industry today.
