On Monday, May 6 the red carpet was rolled out at the Costume Institute for the opening of the 2013 exhibit PUNK: Chaos to Couture.  This red carpet event is called the Oscars of Fashion as it is co-hosted by Anna Wintour, the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue and Artistic Director for Condé Nast, and she would not have it any other way.  This year the honorary chair was the beautiful Beyoncé, along with cochairs Rooney Mara, Riccardo Tisci and Lauren Santo Domingo of Moda Operandi.

Given the theme of the night the invitees and guests had a tough choice to make. Couture as typically seen at the Oscars or the Emmys vs Chaos? What to wear… Many did rise to the occasion with a full out explosion of punk.  We saw spikes galore, heavy eye makeup, glitter and ombre hair, headpieces, mohawks, fingerless leather gloves and heavy chains.

This story can only be told through photos so here is a complete fashion breakdown of some of the celebrities and guests who really embraced their inner punk for the evening.

(From Left to Right) Sarah Jessica Parker goes punk wearing a mohawk Philip Treacy headpiece. The gown is voluminous designed by Giles Deacon and paired with plaid Christian Louboutin boots; Vogue’s Anna Wintour went with a pink floral Chanel gown covered in sequins, plus minimal jewels, but swears she’s not forgoing the theme because “pink is the color of punk” so she told by Andrew Bolton; Madonna tore it up on the red carpet in a custom Givenchy Haute Couture ensemble with a plaid blazer, hot pink Casadei pumps, hanging chains and a black bob; Amanda Seyfried selected a Givenchy Haute Couture gown with Fred Leighton jewelry. The open back and long train certainly made a red statement.

Her Valentino dress from the designer’s 1992 archives had daringly sheer panels and furry cuffs; Beyoncé ended the red carpet arrivals showing up in Givenchy Couture by Riccardo Tisci; her flame motif skirt (with matching over-the-knee boots) held to her snakeskin corset by a studded belt. Jewels were by Lorraine Schwartz; Vampire Diaries starlet Nina Dobrev wore a custom Monique Lhuillier lace bustier jumpsuit with a black leather harness, tulle overskirt and accessorized with Rupert Sanderson pumps.

(From Left to Right) Country Crooner and Grammy winning star Taylor Swift chose a J. Mendel black dress with sheer side panels and plenty of black lace and Lorraine Schwartz jewels; Co-Chair Rooney Mara walked the red carpet in a white lace Givenchy Haute Couture V-neck gown with zipper detailing down the front and a scalloped hem; Miley Cyrus certainly caught everyone’s attention truly embracing the theme of the night wearing a sheer, netted Marc Jacobs gown, which she says makes her feel “so good.” The spiked up hair took us downtown to a dark night club in the 70’s; Katie Holmes white Calvin Klein Collection halter gown spread out on the red carpet was a reminder that spring is in the air and summer is on it’s way.
There are certainly many more statement making fashion looks so head over to vogue.com to see all the style choices of the evening.
