With winter arriving sooner than expected in New York and the surrounding areas I thought I would share some ways to spice up your black winter coat.  What I love most about winter is all the options offered for accessorizing your outerwear.  There is so much to choose from starting with the basics (hat, scarf and gloves) needed just to survive walking around when the temperatures plunge below freezing. My favorite winter accessory is the scarf.  It is the ideal way to add a pop of color to any coat at a minimal investment.

Scarves come in such a large variety of colors, prints, fabrics and sizes and can range in price from a couple of dollars to over a $1,000 dollars if you choose to treat yourself to a luxury designer such as Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Burberry or Gucci.  I suggest you start with the oblong scarf in a print that compliments your winter coat.  Oblong scarves can be tied in a variety of ways and can be worn with both short and long coats.

Some of the big trends now are ombre, aztec prints, color-blocking and faux fur.

To find a scarf that looks expensive but will not break the bank try Urban Outfitters, Banana Republic, J. Crew or Express.

To help you get started here is a video I found called 25 Ways to Wear a scarf in 4.5 Minutes!!  In less than 5 minutes you will become a pro at the art of scarf tying.
