Jen Kao is a NY based Fashion Designer known for innovative tailoring, intricately seamed leather pieces, and experimental knits. On February 10th Jen presented her Fall 2012 collection at Highline Stages as part of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. She called the collection “East meets West for nightcaps”.
The collection was relaxed aristocracy defined by the rigidity of masculinity and the fragility of femininity.
Plush, sultry delicates of silk, high lacquered chiffons, satins, lace, jacquard and cotton sateens were blanketed in military-inspired furs, wool cashmeres and plaids. Signature prints, embroidery and needlepoint crystal mesh created a fusion of dark grunge and luxurious oriental silks. All in languid colors of deep jade teals, midnight navy blue, cassis fuschias, tobacco browns, fiery reds, shades of ash and piano key black and whites.
The collection was accessorized with felt baseball cloches, python overnight briefcases, dodecahedron jewelry and dégradé crystal fringe earrings.
Kao’s talent for three-dimensional sculptural art was reflected in her design aesthetic, highlighting the contrast between architectural construction and fluid draping.
A foxy approach, polished but cagey.
