After spending the last 4 weeks watching fashion shows taking place in four major cities across the globe (New York, London, Milan and Paris) I simply could not miss the chance to talk about the most spectacular show of all; CHANEL Fall 2014.
Not to be outdone by any of his fellow fashion designers Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel’s Creative Director, turned the Grand Palais (a 139,930-square-foot labyrinth) into a modern day Costco-type supermarket to introduce the Fall/Winter 2014 collection. The Kaiser had the shelves stocked with more than 100,000 items of Chanel-branded food which included pasta, soda, meats, cleaning products and even home goods; imagine owning a mop by Chanel!! Over 500 products were relabeled with names that spoke to the history of the french house such as tea called The Little Black Tea and Jasmin Dragon Pearls, a ham called Jambon Cambon which was named after the location of Chanel’s original store and so much more.
When Mr. Lagerfeld was asked why a supermarket “It is something of today’s life and even people who dress at Chanel go there — it’s a modern statement for expensive things.” Signs were posted announcing the daily specials and of course employees dressed in white robes were on hand to help with navigating the maze and assuring there were only satisfied consumers.
In the front row sat Rihanna, Keira Knightley, Clémence Poésy and Melanie Griffith with daughter Stella Banderas.
As the guests arrived they stepped on doormats stamped Mademoiselle Privé and proceeded to wonder the aisles of a fully stocked grocery in amazement pushing plastic Chanel shopping carts, certainly a true Instagram moment.
Then the show started with 21 year old model Cara Delevingne romping down Aisle 5 wearing a 2 piece pink shredded sweat suit, an oversized tweed coat and training sneakers in bright neon colors borrowed from the Spring show. The clothes had a laid back feel and were designed with a sporty vibe. Of course classic Chanel resonated in the collection with the pink and pastel colored thick tweed suits. Chains were draped across waistbands and also worn as thick necklaces. Some models carried supermarket baskets which were also draped with wrap-around chains while others paraded through the supermarket with the small quilted purse that has become synonymous with the double C Chanel logo. Strands of pearls were added to give the show a ladylike sophistication as seen on the aristocratic women of Paris. The footwear was the highlight of the show with flat sneakers extending up the calves to become boots.
The make-up added a pop of color by using brightly colored eyeshadow and a cat-eye black liner. The hair, which was created by Sam McKnight, was an exaggerated ponytail that created volume and texture with crimped extensions and braids in multicoloured Chanel tweed rags, lace with some pearls.
Following the show the guests returned to roam the aisles and pretty much looted whatever they could. Certainly a memorable experience after 4 long weeks of back to back runway shows.
